  • Nikon D90 luv

I decided my laptop fund would be better to put to use on a lovely DSLR camera which should last me longer than any laptop!  It’s a Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens from Pro Photo Supply in northwest Portland. A few pictures from this morning of the BFs cat.  Heading out tomorrow on a picture walk to play around.  Need to get a wide angle lens and a 50mm lens to add to the kit!  I have a lot of stuff to figure out on this baby.

Charles and his harness didn’t get very far outdoors

    Let me in!

  • Slideshow

Went out wandering after the Knit and Crochet Show today. It was 90 degrees out but lovely in the shade and with the breeze over the river. I walked from the Convention Center to 14th and Lovejoy. Hopefully I don’t have a sunburn!

    I want a DSLR :(

  • Sock wearing season

It has gotten below 50 in the morning this week, chilly on the way to work.  I’ve worn handknit wool socks twice this week.  Yay!  Today’s pair was these Hedera’s by Cookie A. I actually finished these in Feburary of 2007, but one got lost in the chasm of my apartment.  They were both found during apartment purging a few weeks ago and have now been blocked and photographed for posterity.  This was my third pair of finished socks.

    Hedera

I spent last weekend picking up parts for the light box this was photographed in. It consists of some PVC pipe and fittings, a cheap hack saw, cheap task lamps, 100W Daylight compact florecent bulbs, white poster board and some thin batiste white fabric. It was super fast to chop up the PVC pipe.  (The hard part was figuring out how to put 10 foot pieces of pvc in my car).  I need to take a picture when I actually get the fabric panels built. I just draped it over so I could take pictures immediately. My inspiration was this DIY Light Box.  And since nothing is glued, it breaks down!  Hopefully this will be usefull for phoographing small stuff, selling stuff on etsy/ebay and for yarn pictures ;)

And another sock started… (I need more commute time)

    I can’t stop giggling

  • I need to knit faster

    Rambling Friday afternoon post!

I started a sweater last Friday out of the Woobu from Blue Moon Fiber Arts.  Lovely stuff. I will finally make a sweater!  I have some other stuff (some sekret!) on the needles as well and I’m switching between them all so my finger’s don’t get bored.  I think my New Year’s Resolution for 2009 will be to buy no yarn or fabric until I knit/sew/dispose of the stash.  (I wonder how long that one will last???)  Anyway, the sweater is the Tangled Yoke Cardigan from Interweave Knits Fall 2007.  Pictured at left.  I sure hope it fits.  If anything it will be too small, but that’s fine.  (I’ve lost 3.5 pounds this week alone!)

These are my favorites from Norah Gaughan, vol. 3. They scream FALL IS COMING!!!! KNIT ME!!!!  I of course promptly ordered the pamphlet (and vol. 1).  I really like the first one (Loppem) but at my current shape I don’t think it would be flattering.  I’ve seen some plus size ones on Ravelry and I’m not digging it with a big bust.  I think upside-down V shape the front makes accentuates the hips. The second one looks too big for the model, but I like the idea.  Probably too shapelss for my figure though.  The back is gathered to a yoke.

Just ran across this one today. It is called Indigo by Tonia Barry.  I’m not sure what hit me first, the color or the cables?  It is BRILLIANT!  I’ve seen a lot of cardigans with cables like this but they’ve all been hoodies.  Hoodies are fine and all but I think they’re a bit too casual for work (which is hilarious becuase I wear jeans a lot to work).

And oh dear, American Girl doll clothes!!! Someone might want these for gifts!  Lacy Bolero From Elaine Phillips and Very Easy Cardigan for American Girl or 18″ Doll by Ceci Riehl

Don’t even get me started on nordic stranded sweaters.

  • I.O.U.S.A.

    Please excuse the sleepy post…

Went to the premiere of I.O.U.S.A tonight with boyfriend and his mum.  We were surprised it was sold out! It’s a documentary about the growing national debt and it’s impact on the citizenry.  Good movie, not as boring or as over my head as I anticipated :)   And non-partisan.  It was over 2.5 hours, please excuse the bleary eyed post…

    Description from their page:

Wake up, America! We’re on the brink of a financial meltdown.

I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the United States and its citizens. As the Baby Boomer generation prepares to retire, will there even be any Social Security benefits left to collect? Burdened with an ever-expanding government and military, increased international competition, overextended entitlement programs, and debts to foreign countries that are becoming impossible to honor, America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions.

Throughout history, the American government has found it nearly impossible to spend only what has been raised through taxes. Wielding candid interviews with both average American taxpayers and government officials, Sundance veteran Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) helps demystify the nation’s financial practices and policies. The film follows U.S. Comptroller General David Walker as he crisscrosses the country explaining America’s unsustainable fiscal policies to its citizens.

With surgical precision, Creadon interweaves archival footage and economic data to paint a vivid and alarming profile of America’s current economic situation. The ultimate power of I.O.U.S.A. is that the film moves beyond doomsday rhetoric to proffer potential financial scenarios and propose solutions about how we can recreate a fiscally sound nation for future generations.

Pointedly topical and consummately nonpartisan, I.O.U.S.A. drives home the message that the only time for America’s financial future is now!

At the end there was a town-hall discussion with Warren Buffet and some other people I’d never heard of before.

Interesting points brought up at the end about what the average American can do to help:

    • Medicare: preventitive medicine, take care of self (Medicare is by far the largest portion of government spending)
    • Save (Currently the US is at a negative savings rate for the first time in history).
    • Vote (Let the politicians know you want something done)
    • Work until at 70, putting more into social security
    • Government has no money (we have trillions of dollars of debt!), so stop expecting them to bail you out (home loans, etc)

That’s about all I have to say tonight, I had to write this down before it left my head!
